Ballet by Renato Zanella
Maurice Ravel conceived his most famous work Bolero, by a commission from the Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein. It premiered with great success at the Paris Opera in 1928 and is best known to the dance world in the rendering by Maurice Béjart from 1961. Renato Zanella joins the many choreographers who created to this composition, made up of a single escalating theme. Zanella's interpretation draws from Ravel's basic idea of the eternal musical struggle for supremacy between rhythm (power) and melody (beauty), which he underlines with the thought that reason (melody, beauty) rarely wins in a confrontation with a force of power.
Ssss…, ballet by Edward Clug to the music by Frédéric Chopin
»Be quiet,« whispers Edward Clug to us with his eloquent choreography Ssss … to the music by Frédéric Chopin. But his »sh« does not cut into the space like the authoritarian interjection »hush« because, in his case, with the three dots that follow it, it remains fairly open …
The Rite (Sacre), a ballet by Renato Zanella to the music by Igor Stravinsky (arranged by Jonathan McPhee)
Igor Stravinsky is known as a revolutionary composer who pushed the limits of musical creation with his way of composing. Ballet music The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du printemps) ranks among the prime examples of his unique composing. The choreography by Renato Zanella says he felt that he had to offer to the spectators his belief that the ritual we humans have been practising most persistently throughout our history is, in fact, the ritual of war. We sacrifice peace in order to gain peace.
