Hugo Mbeng
French ballet dancer Hugo Mbeng began his studies at the Paris Opera Ballet School and later attended the Paris Regional Conservatory (Conservatoire regional de Paris). He graduated with honours from the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris), where he studied under principal teachers Cyril Atanassof, Sergei Soloviev, Alain Debrus and Jocelyn Bosser (2000-2005). In addition to his artistic diploma, he earned a Dance Instructor Certificate, thus specialising in contemporary and modern jazz dance and gaining an education in African dance.
He obtained his first stage experience at the Ballet Company of the Paris National Conservatory, where he participated in such ballet creations as Suite en blanc (Suite in White) by Serge Lifar (dir. by Gilbert Mayer), Rave (dir. by Karole Armitage) and Quaterneaire (dir. by Jean-Guillaume Bart). In the 2005/2006 season he joined the Avignon Ballet (Ballet de l’Opéra Grand Avignon), where he danced in La Périchole and La vie parisienne (Parisian Life) by J. Offenbach as well as in the opera Le negre des lumieres by Joseph Bologne de Saint-Georges (Chevalier de Saint-Georges).
From 2006 to 2012, he was a member of the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, led by Nanette Glushak, where he appeared in such performances as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Cheshire Cat, dir. by Michel Rahn), Vaynonen's Flames of Paris (Pas de deux), Balanchine's Allegro Brilliante, Tarantella (Pas de Deux), Kylian's Six Dances, Sinfonietta, Petite Mort and Symphony in D, Nil Christe's: SYNC, Symphonie en trois mouvements (Symphony in Three Movements) and in the productions of Don Quixote (Gipsy King), Nutcracker (Chinese Dance), Coppélia (Harlequin Doll) and Giselle. In 2008 he appeared as a guest performer in Balanchine’s Who Cares with the Dortmund Ballet.
In 2012, he joined the Tulsa Ballet (Oklahoma, USA) under the artistic leadership of Marcello Angelini, where he performed in Ben Stevenson's Dracula, Wayne McGregor's PreSentient in the production of Nutcracker, as well as in Georges Balanchine's The Four Temperaments and Yuri Possokhov's Classical Symphony.
Also worth mentioning among his achievements are two film productions in which he took part: Un Jour je serai Danseuse (2005) and Comme ils respirent (2015).
Hugo Mbeng has been engaged at the SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana (Slovenian National Theatre Opera and Ballet Ljubljana) since 2014, where he was promoted to demi-soloist in 2015 and soloist in 2022. He has appeared as a soloist in many ballet productions: Peter and the Wolf by Ivan Peternelj, Composition by Sanja Nešković Peršin, Swan Lake by Lynne Charles (after L. Ivanov and M. Petipa), A Viennese Evening (diptych Opus 73 and Everybody Waltzes) by Renato Zanella, Romeo and Juliet by Youri Vámos, The Sleeping Beauty by Irek Mukhamedov (after M. Petipa), Le Corsaire (Birbant) by José Carlos Martinez, Doctor Zhivago by Jiři and Otto Bubenicek, Romeo and Juliet (Mercutio) by Renato Zanella, Coppélia at Montmartre (Gigolo) by Youri Vámos, Nutcracker (The Devil, Bob Cratchit, Solo Couple in The Waltz of the Flowers, Spanish Dance) by Youri Vámos, Great Gatsby by Leo Mujić, Picko in Packo (Max and Moritz) (Packo) by Torsten Händler, etc.
In recent years, the ballet artist has also been frequently engaged as a dance pedagogue.
